Preserving Your Jewellery

To help your heirlooms stand the test of time we recommend the following care instructions:

  • Do not wear while using household cleaning / chemicals - Chemicals can erode gold, silver, and be abrasive to diamonds and gemstones. It is always best to remove your jewellery so they do not become contaminated and damaged.

  • Do not wear at the gym / carrying heavy objects such as shopping bags - Lifting heavy objects and metal objects can warp a ring out of shape. The ridged metal on gym equipment can also mark, scratch and cause major damage to your rings.

  • Do not wear while swimming in pools or the ocean - pools can contain chemicals that can cause erosion to the gold, silver, gemstones and diamonds. This is the same for the ocean. If jewellery is not throughly rinsed after being in the ocean, once dried the salt from the water can start to cause erosion and make the metal brittle and potentially break.

  • Always put jewellery on last after applying costemics and perfumes. Some cosmetic products can degrade materials, especially pearls. Pearls are soft and porous, this means they easily absorb any products easily. To prevent any damage to the pearls, always put the jewellery on last and when the cosmetics have dried on the skin. You can also give your pearls a light wipe over with a soft jewellery cloth after wearing them. This will remove any products from the pearls and will help keep the pearls luster for a lifetime to come.

Cleaning at Home

We always recommend going to a professional jeweller to get your jewellery cleaned and checked over once a year. Similar to a car service, jewellery also requires regular maintenance. This will ensure that all the diamonds and gemstones don't become loose and the metal can be checked over for any wear and tear. It is important to remember that even though diamonds are rated as one of the hardest substances on earth, they can still break. Gold and diamonds are not imperial and wear and tear will occur over time. With annual checks with a jeweller your heirlooms will stand the test of time.

We understand that not everyone will have time to visit a jeweller and cleaning at home can be more convenient. If you decide to clean your jewellery at home, we recommend using a very soft bristled tooth brush and warm water.

You can soak your jewellery in warm water and this will help loosen any substance behind and gemstones and diamonds. Using the soft tooth brush you can gently brush in and around the diamonds and gemstones to gently remove any excess or suborn dirt. You may need to repeat this a few times to remove all dirt.

If you purchase a jewellery cleaning solution, read the instructions carefully and rinse your jewellery throughly. Some solutions contain harsh chemicals and if used incorrectly can cause more harm than good.
